IRAQ-IRAN BORDER, IRAQ: Iraqi children play 24 May 2001 in al-Hawizeh marsh, on the Iraq-Iran border. The marshes of Mesopotamia, where the Marsh Arabs of Iraq developed a unique way of life over thousands of years, have been largely lost to drainage and damming, according to UN experts. The effect of numerous dams built at points upstream for irrigation and electricity, and drainage schemes carried out in 1970s, have been compounded by "massive drainage work" carried out in southern Iraq following the Gulf War. The marshlands lie where the igris and the Euphrates rivers onverge in southern Iraq, partially extending into Iran. AFP PHOTO/KARIM SAHIB (Photo credit should read KARIM SAHIB/AFP via Getty Images)
